It’s raining irony, so go get a bucket. The man known for his great songs about brotherhood and, poignantly, not to worry about a thing, has been at the center of numerous bitter and long legal battles. Rastafarian culture dictated that Marley not have a will - this started a sea of litigation that has never really stopped since his death in 1981. With only 10 percent of his estate due to her under Jamaican law, Bob’s widow Rita conspired with his lawyer and accountant to forge documents that would determine what happened to his fortune. One of Bob’s managers caught wind of this and sued. The trio were eventually removed from control. Then a legal fluke in the Nineties passed the rights of Marley’s image to his heirs, including Rita. In 1996 the lawyer and accountant were successfully sued for $6 million, because they plundered Marley’s estate. In 2006 a former guitarist of Bob’s sued the estate for unpaid money, but lost. In 2010 the estate failed to win a case that would give them rights to his biggest songs. And in 2011 they sued Bob’s half-brother, Richard, for using the Marley surname to promote concerts. It looks like the only one who took Bob’s advice was himself...
