Approximately 25 people were killed in a violent shootout between police and miners at the Lonmin Marikana mine in Rustenburg, North West. The number includes two policemen, two security guards, and a National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) shop steward. The police opened fire on mine workers after the armed group refused to disperse from a hilltop near the mine. This has caused an outrage in the country , having unions such as Azanian People's Organization comparing it to the Sharpeville and Soweto shootings.
